Course Description | This course examines the political and ethical challenges of confronting historical violence and the demands for redress in transitional, democratic, and post-conflict societies. Through case studies from across the globe, students explore how memory, historical responsibility, and justice intersect in efforts toward reconciliation. The course analyzes evolving norms around historical redress, reparations, and accountability, particularly in light of expanding debates on colonialism, race, and slavery in established democracies. Topics include the emergence of transitional justice, the politics of reparations, competing narratives of victimization, and the contested role of history in national and international reconciliation efforts. |
