| Course Description | Before capitalism, there was commercial society. This course examines European debates about commerce, luxury, and social organization from the late seventeenth through the late eighteenth centuries. We will survey a range of theoretical perspectives on the new forms of commercial sociability and political life emerging in Europe, whether triumphant, despairing, or ambivalent. |
