Course Description

Impact Measurement and Management provides students with practical skills and conceptual frameworks to assess, track, and manage the social and environmental effects of investments, policies, and organizational strategies. The course examines how impact is defined, measured, and integrated into decision-making across private, public, and nonprofit sectors, drawing on global standards, stakeholder-driven approaches, and systems-level thinking.

Students will explore tools and methodologies for measuring change, balancing quantitative and qualitative evidence, and aligning impact goals with investment strategies. The course emphasizes the difference between compliance-based reporting and learning-driven impact practices, and considers how businesses, investors, and communities define and use impact to generate both financial and social value. Guest speakers and real-world case examples complement applied skill-building assignments.

This course is ideal for students interested in sustainable finance, social entrepreneurship, public policy, ESG analysis, or development, and builds upon related SIPA courses offered through the Sustainable Investing Research Initiative (SIRI).
