| Course Description | The postwar analysis of contemporary art has jettisoned many of the fields of the discipline of art history: iconography; workshop; style, in favor of a reading based on the semiology of the sign. This has transformed the discourse on contemporary art, especially as that concerns Cubism and Abstraction. The course will focus on semiology and Barthes’ practice of it, with recourse to his major works: Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes, S/Z, Mythologies, and Camera Lucida. |
