| Course Description | This "Lab" Capstone Course is for students that seek to have careers in Product Management in firms that develop and commercialize SOFTWARE products. This course will provide students with hands-on product management experience, working directly with product managers at real companies, where teams of approximately 4 students will be paired with a unique company to solve their unique problem (each team in the class will be working with a different company). Examples of companies that have sponsored projects in the past include Disney/Hulu, Google, NBA, Amazon, LinkedIn, Spotify, New York Times, Dell and Microsoft, to name a few. Students that take this course MUST have previous exposure to, and familiarity with, the frameworks and concepts that are commonly used in Product Management. Accordingly, the pre-requisite (preferred) or co-requisite (accepted) for this course is the introductory Product Management course (MRKT B8636). If you do NOT meet the pre-requisite or co-requisite, you may request a waiver by completing this form bit.ly/3paWUvj PRIOR to registering for the class. The waiver is intended for students with existing Product Management experience who wish to enroll directly without completing MRKT B8636. We will move very quickly through the product development process and it will be challenging to deliver quality work if you are not already familiar with the PM frameworks, so please be thoughtful before registering. The Lab will provide students with the opportunity to put those best practices and frameworks into practice by applying them to real problems and opportunities offered up by the companies. Students will be assigned specific product challenges and be responsible for completing assignments across most stages of the product development cycle, from ideation through a commercialization thesis. Assignments will include the delivery of a Market Requirements Doc (MRD) and a Product Requirements Doc (PRD), culminating in a Final Presentation to company executives with the suggested MVP (likely including a Prototype), commercialization thesis and business rationale. This course is best suited for students that are motivated to work in teams (you will be evaluated by your peers during the term) and deliver high-quality work (you will be the face of CBS to third party companies). |
