| Course Description | Camera Geographica: Climate Change & Gaze Politics. How can environmental damage be documented? How to incorporate research into art that responds to climate catastrophe? How to provide respect for local communities affected by the unstoppable effects of ecological damage? This course explores the intersection of photography, environmental crisis, and the ethics of media. Drawing on historical approaches in photography and environmental studies, students learn to incorporate scientific data (satellite imagery, spatial data) into studio practices and data visualization. Field trips will include Rutherfurd Observatory, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and Climate School, as well as conversations with artists working at the intersection of the arts and sciences. Students will develop an environmental - related research project. |
